Podcast Branding: Build a Show Identity That Gets Listeners to Subscribe on Episode One

Podcast branding determines the first impression of a show in the second before someone presses play: the cover art, the show title, the episode title, and the one-sentence show description all communicate what listening will be like. Listeners browsing for new shows make subscription decisions in under 3 seconds based on these brand elements — before they've heard a single word. Getting the brand right is prerequisite to getting listeners.

Podcast cover art is the highest-stakes visual brand decision for most shows: it's the primary visual in every platform listing, every social share, and every 'shows I listen to' screenshot. The cover art that works in a 200x200 pixel thumbnail (the size shown in most podcast app lists) is not the same as the cover art that works at 3000x3000 (the full-resolution file). Test your design at the actual display sizes before committing.

Show title clarity vs. intrigue is the key naming decision: show titles that clearly describe the content ('Marketing School', 'How I Built This') attract the right listeners immediately but have less intrigue. Titles that create curiosity ('How I Made This', 'Acquired') attract broader browsers but may attract the wrong listeners. The best titles for most shows — especially new shows without a pre-existing audience — lean toward clarity: be discoverable first, then interesting.

The show's positioning statement (the one-sentence description in the listing) should be written as a promise to a specific listener, not as a description of the host's interests. 'Where startup founders learn the marketing tactics behind 9-figure bootstrapped businesses' is a promise to a specific person. 'A show about marketing and business growth hosted by experienced entrepreneurs' is a description that could belong to 10,000 podcasts.
