How to Write Product Descriptions That Sell

Product descriptions are the brand's conversion copy at the exact moment a customer is closest to purchasing — and most product descriptions fail to do the job. The typical product description describes what the product is (features) rather than what it does for the customer (benefits) and what life looks like when using it (transformation). This distinction, consistently applied across a product catalog, is the difference between a store that converts at 1% and one that converts at 4%.

The feature-benefit-transformation framework: Features describe the product ('made from 100% Merino wool'). Benefits translate features into customer value ('soft, non-itchy, naturally temperature-regulating'). Transformation shows the customer how their experience changes ('wear it at the office and on the plane without discomfort or overheating'). Great product descriptions use all three layers, with transformation doing the most persuasive work.

Sensory language activates the imagination in a way that technical descriptions cannot: 'a rich, deep blue' creates a more vivid mental image than 'blue.' 'A smooth, matte finish' is more evocative than 'matte surface.' 'The scent of fresh cedar and black pepper' creates a sensory preview in a way that 'cedarwood and pepper fragrance notes' doesn't. Sensory language is particularly powerful for physical products that customers can't touch, smell, or taste online.

The size/fit/care information that most brands bury in a separate tab is actually brand copy if it's written with the customer's experience in mind rather than as a legal disclaimer: 'This sweater fits true to size in a relaxed silhouette — I'm 5'8" and 145lbs and wearing a small' is more useful and more human than 'Size S measures 38" chest. Machine wash cold.' Both contain the same information; only one creates trust.
