How to Create a Memorable Tagline: The Strategy Behind Great Slogans

A great tagline does several things simultaneously: it communicates the brand's core positioning, differentiates it from alternatives, creates a memorable phrase that sticks in the audience's mind, and ideally inspires an emotional response in the target customer. Most taglines do none of these things because they're written as afterthoughts rather than as core brand strategy.

The tagline types and when to use them: (1) Positioning taglines — directly communicate the brand's differentiated position ('The Sleep Company That Has Your Back'). Best for businesses with clear category differentiation. (2) Benefit taglines — state the customer benefit the brand delivers ('Life Tastes Better with Pepsi'). Best for consumer brands with emotional benefits. (3) Values taglines — communicate brand values or personality ('Do One Thing Well'). Best for brands with strong cultural positioning. (4) Action taglines — tell customers what to do ('Just Do It,' 'Think Different'). Best for aspirational lifestyle brands.

The tagline writing process: start with the brand's most important differentiator and most valuable customer benefit. Write 20 versions that communicate this in different forms — questions, commands, benefits, metaphors, contrasts. Evaluate against criteria: Is it memorable? Is it specific to the brand (could a competitor use it?). Is it true and deliverable? Does it resonate with the target customer? The tagline that survives all four tests is worth keeping.

The tagline longevity test: great taglines don't change because they capture something timeless about the brand's positioning. 'Just Do It' was created in 1988 and is unchanged 35+ years later — because the human truth it references (overcoming inertia, taking action) doesn't expire. If a tagline feels like it needs updating within 3 years, it wasn't capturing something timeless about the brand.

SmartBrandly generates tagline options with positioning rationale for any business description — multiple variations across different tagline types, so you can find the one that's exactly right. Generate your tagline at https://smartbrandly.smartbrandly.workers.dev
