A brand style guide — also called a brand manual, brand book, or visual identity guide — is the definitive reference document for how your brand should look, sound, and feel across every touchpoint. Without one, brand consistency is impossible to maintain as your business grows.
The essential elements of a brand style guide are: logo usage rules (sizes, clear space, acceptable and unacceptable uses), color palette (primary colors, secondary colors, exact hex/RGB/CMYK codes), typography (heading font, body font, how to use them), photography and imagery style, voice and tone guidelines, and boilerplate description.
The logo usage section is often the most violated without a guide. Specify: the minimum size the logo can appear, the required clear space around the logo, which color backgrounds are acceptable, which modifications are forbidden (stretching, recoloring, adding effects), and which logo variations are approved.
Your color palette section needs to go beyond just showing the colors. Document the exact specifications your print vendor, web developer, and designer will need: Pantone (PMS) numbers for physical printing, CMYK percentages for offset printing, RGB values for digital use, and hex codes for web.
SmartBrandly generates a complete brand kit including color palettes with hex codes, typography recommendations, taglines, and voice guidelines — everything you need to create your brand style guide. Get it at https://smartbrandly.smartbrandly.workers.dev
