How to Build a Memorable Brand Voice With Just These 5 Principles

Brand voice — the consistent personality your brand expresses through every word it writes, speaks, and publishes — is the most durable differentiator available to businesses of any size. Products can be copied; pricing can be matched; distribution can be replicated. A genuinely distinctive brand voice cannot be copied without being detected as inauthentic, and it builds recognition and trust that compounds over years.

Principle 1: Be specific. Generic language ('we provide high-quality solutions') could describe any business. Specific language ('we build brand kits that make $80,000/year businesses look like $800,000/year businesses') creates a vivid, memorable impression. Specificity is credibility. Vagueness is forgettable.

Principle 2: Choose a side. Brands with a clear point of view — something they strongly believe in and something they actively reject — are more memorable than brands that try to appeal to everyone by standing for nothing. Having an opinion is a brand personality; being balanced is a non-personality.

Principle 3: Sound human. The test for brand voice humanness: would a real person, having a genuine conversation, say this? Corporate speak, passive voice, and jargon-heavy sentences fail this test. Short sentences, active voice, and conversational language pass it.

Principle 4: Be consistent. The most powerful brand voices are recognizable without the logo — you know it's that brand from the writing alone. Consistency across every touchpoint compounds into recognition. Inconsistency, even if each individual piece is good, doesn't build a cumulative brand impression.

Principle 5: Surprise occasionally. The brand voice that is completely predictable loses attention over time. A brand known for being serious that occasionally makes a deadpan joke; a technical brand that occasionally uses a beautifully simple human metaphor — these surprises create delight that deepens the relationship.
