Bad creative work almost always comes from a bad brief, not a bad creative. When designers, copywriters, and marketers have clear strategic direction, they produce better work faster. When they guess at the strategy, even talented creatives produce off-target results.
Creative Brief Section 1 — Project Overview: What is this project? (rebrand, campaign, individual asset). What is the deliverable? (logo, landing page, print ad). What is the deadline? What is the budget? Who is the internal owner and decision-maker?
Creative Brief Section 2 — Brand Context: Company background (2-3 sentences). Brand positioning (who you serve, what you do, why you're different). Brand personality (4-5 adjectives). Brand voice (formal/casual, serious/playful on each axis). Existing brand assets (link to brand guide or assets).
Creative Brief Section 3 — Target Audience: Who specifically is this creative speaking to? (name a single person — demographic, psychographic). What do they currently believe? What do you want them to believe or do after seeing this creative? What objections or hesitations might they have?
Creative Brief Section 4 — Objective and Message: What is the single most important thing this creative must communicate? (one sentence) What action should the audience take? What's the secondary message if you have space? How will you measure success?
Creative Brief Section 5 — Inspiration and Constraints: Brands you admire and why (specifically for this type of creative). Brands to avoid or differentiate from. Technical constraints (size, format, platform requirements). Mandatory elements (logo, legal copy, specific products).
