Brand Naming Strategy: How to Choose a Company Name That Scales

Company naming is the most permanent brand decision you'll make and one of the hardest to change later. A great brand name is memorable, distinctive, scalable, available to trademark, and emotionally resonant with your target customer. A poor one creates friction at every touchpoint for as long as the business exists.

The five naming archetypes are: invented names (Google, Kodak — completely made up, highly trademarkable), compound names (Facebook, Salesforce — two real words combined), modified real words (Pinterest, Tumblr — real word with a twist), metaphorical names (Amazon, Apple — real noun used metaphorically), and descriptive names (General Electric, General Mills — describes the category).

The trademark availability check is non-negotiable before committing to any name. The USPTO TESS database is searchable for free. You need to search not just for exact matches but for confusingly similar marks in the same industry class. A name that already exists in your category creates legal risk even if the exact spelling is different.

Domain availability is a practical constraint: if .com isn't available, you'll pay premium prices for it later or settle for a less authoritative extension. Check the exact .com you want and 2-3 likely variations before falling in love with a name.
