Brand measurement is the practice of quantifying whether your brand investments — the time, money, and attention spent on positioning, visual identity, content, and experience design — are generating real business outcomes. Most brand metrics reported are vanity metrics that feel important but don't predict revenue. Understanding which metrics actually signal brand health enables better brand investment decisions.
The brand metrics that predict revenue: (1) Direct traffic percentage — the proportion of your site traffic that comes from people typing your URL or brand name directly indicates brand awareness. A growing direct traffic percentage means your brand is becoming more recognizable. (2) Branded search volume — the number of monthly searches for your company name or product name in Google Search Console. Growth here means more people are actively seeking you out. (3) Net Promoter Score — the percentage of customers who rate their likelihood to recommend you at 9-10 out of 10. NPS is the leading indicator of word-of-mouth growth.
Brand share of voice — the percentage of the total conversation about your category that mentions your brand — is more sophisticated than traffic or revenue metrics alone because it measures how much mental space your brand occupies in the market relative to competitors. Share of voice is harder to measure but tracks the direction your brand is heading before it shows up in revenue.
The conversion rate from first-touch to purchase is the most direct measure of brand clarity and trust: if visitors who find you through organic search, social media, or referrals convert to customers at 2% and a competitor converts at 5%, the difference is substantially explained by brand — clearer positioning, more compelling social proof, more trustworthy visual identity, or better conversion copy. A/B testing brand elements on landing pages converts these subjective qualities into measurable revenue impact.
