Brand Identity vs. Brand Image: Understanding the Difference

Brand identity and brand image are frequently confused but describe fundamentally different things: brand identity is the intended self-presentation — the deliberate choices a brand makes about visual style, messaging, values, and personality that are encoded in brand guidelines and expressed through all brand communications. Brand image is the actual perception — what customers, prospects, and the market actually believe about the brand, formed through every interaction they've had with it. The gap between identity and image is the brand's credibility challenge.
Measuring brand image: the only reliable way to know your brand image is to ask people who interact with it — customers, prospects, and people who've heard of but never engaged with the brand. The three questions that reveal brand image most clearly: (1) What three words would you use to describe this brand? (2) Who is this brand for? (3) What makes this brand different from alternatives? The answers to these questions tell you what people actually believe about the brand, not what you want them to believe.
The identity-image gap analysis: when there's a significant gap between how a brand intends to be perceived and how it's actually perceived, the causes are usually one of three things: the brand identity wasn't communicated consistently enough (people don't know what the brand intends), the identity claims aren't supported by the actual customer experience (people don't believe the brand's claims), or the identity is poorly designed and doesn't resonate with the target audience.
Closing the gap strategy: if research reveals a gap between identity and image, the fix depends on the cause. Inconsistent communication requires better consistency and more distribution of the brand message. Unsupported identity claims require improving the actual customer experience to match the brand promise. Poor identity design requires a brand redesign that better expresses the intended positioning in terms that resonate with the target audience.
